Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a future technology. It is already transforming how we learn, work, communicate and make decisions. Alongside the green and digital transitions, AI is reshaping almost every sector of society, from healthcare and education to manufacturing, finance and public services. Rather than replacing people, AI is changing how work gets done by automating routine tasks while leaving humans to provide judgement, creativity and context. 

As AI becomes part of everyday life, the real question is no longer whether we will use it, but how we will use it responsibly. This is becoming an essential skill not only for AI specialists, but also for students, professionals and organisations navigating an increasingly AI-enabled world

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) research suggests that AI is changing work less by replacing jobs and more by reshaping tasks. As routine activities become automated, human judgementcreativity and ethical decision-making become even more valuable. This raises an important question: do we have the skills to use AI responsibly? 

The future of artificial intelligence will depend not only on technological progress, but also on our ability to understand, question and apply it in ways that benefit people, society and the planet. Ethical AI is therefore not only about developing better technologies; it is about developing better human capabilities.

Why Ethical AI Matters 

Ethical AI refers to the design and use of Artificial intelligence in ways that are fairtransparentsafeaccountable and aligned with human values. While AI systems can process enormous amounts of information in seconds, they do not understand context, values or human consequences in the way people do. 

As AI increasingly influences decisions about employment, education, healthcare, finance and public services, the risks of biasmisinformation and unintended consequences also grow. AI systems learn from existing data, which may reflect historical inequalities or incomplete perspectives. If we simply accept AI-generated outputs without questioning them, these biases can easily be reinforced and scaled. 

Responsible AI therefore requires human oversight. It means understanding not only what AI can do, but also recognising its limitations and knowing when human judgement must take the lead. 

This shift is already reflected in the organisations developing the world’s most advanced AI systems. As The Economist recently noted, leading AI laboratories are increasingly hiring philosophers and ethicists alongside engineers, recognising that questions of fairness, accountability, human rights and values cannot be solved by technology alone. Building responsible AI requires technical expertise, but it also requires people who can ask better questions. 

Ethical AI Is Also Sustainable AI 

Responsible AI is closely linked to sustainability. While AI can help optimise energy systems, improve resource efficiency, support climate action and monitor biodiversity, it also consumes significant amounts of energy, water and computing resources. 

Using AI responsibly therefore means considering not only what AI can automate, but also when it genuinely adds value, when simpler digital solutions may be sufficient, and how AI can contribute positively to society, the environment and the economy. Responsible AI is therefore not only about fairness and transparency; it is also about ensuring that innovation supports sustainable development

Ethical AI Is a Human Skill 

As AI becomes integrated into everyday life and work, AI literacy is no longer just a technical competency. It is becoming a fundamental life and workplace skill. 

Using AI responsibly requires more than knowing which tools to use. It requires the ability to think critically about AI-generated information, understand where it comes from, recognise its limitations and make informed decisions based on human judgement. 

This is where our uniquely human skills become our greatest advantage. 

Perhaps most importantly, these skills help create more inclusive and human-centred AI

This vision is reflected in the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial intelligence, the first global framework adopted by Member States to guide AI ethics and AI governance. Rather than focusing solely on technology, it promotes principles such as human oversightfairnesstransparencydiversityinclusiveness and AI literacy, recognising that responsible AI depends as much on informed people and good governance as it does on technology. 

Ultimately, ethical AI is not only about developing better technology. It is about empowering people with the knowledge, critical thinking and ethical awareness to question AI, challenge assumptions and use it responsibly throughout their lives and careers. 

From Using AI to Learning with Intention 

Perhaps the biggest challenge in the age of AI is not learning something new. It is unlearning what no longer serves us. 

Futurist Alvin Toffler famously suggested that the illiterate of the future would not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. 

We have already seen this with sustainability. Many behaviours that once felt completely normal, such as using single-use plastics without thinking, wasting food or assuming natural resources were unlimited, are now being questioned. Responding to climate change has required us not only to learn new knowledge, but also to challenge old assumptions and change long-established habits. 

Artificial intelligence requires exactly the same mindset. 

Using AI every day does not automatically build AI literacy. Responsible AI requires intentional learning: developing the judgement to know when AI is useful, when it should be questioned, and when human expertise must take the lead. This is why lifelong learning is becoming more important than ever. AI skills are not something we acquire once and keep forever. As technology evolves, so must our understanding of its opportunities, limitations and ethical implications.
