Course overview

Navigating sustainability challenges requires more than technical knowledge; it calls for the ability to make informed decisions amid uncertainty, competing priorities, and rapidly changing conditions. This practice-focused course introduces adaptive leadership and systems thinking, drawing on the Cynefin Framework and other tools to help participants understand complex problems, identify leverage points, and develop effective responses. Through six self-paced modules, practitioner insights, and scenario-based activities, learners will strengthen their ability to act confidently under uncertainty and build support for change within their organisations.

What you will learn:

  • Distinctions between simple, complicated, and complex problems, including wicked challenges.
  • Application of the Cynefin Framework to understand problems and guide decisions.
  • Systems mapping to identify feedback loops, leverage points, and underlying drivers of change.
  • Use of sense-making, simple rules, and safe-to-fail approaches in uncertain environments.
  • Adaptive leadership strategies for managing risks, building internal support, and taking practical steps forward.
